Achievement "A Tale of Siyam Hossain Swamibag Shikhon Kendra-2"

Siyam Hossain, a 10-year-old boy, was born in 2014 in a remote village of Barishal district. He is the only child of his parents. Siyam’s father, Mohammad Sohel, was a day labourer, and his mother, Sabiha Begum, a housewife. However, life for Siyam and his mother was not easy. Before Siyam’s birth, his father married for the second time, abandoned Sabiha Begum, and severed all communication with her. With no support from her husband, Sabiha returned to her mother’s home, where she gave birth to Siyam. When Siyam was just four years old, his grandmother, Roksana Begum, arranged a second marriage for her daughter, Sabiha. After the marriage, Sabiha moved in with her new husband, leaving Siyam in the care of his grandmother. From that time onward, it was Roksana who became both guardian and caregiver, raising Siyam on her limited means. For eight years, Siyam and his grandmother lived in a rented house in Narayanganj. During this time, Roksana managed to admit Siyam into a local kindergarten, where he started schooling from class one. However, due to financial hardship and unstable living conditions, they later had to leave Narayanganj and move to Swamibag in Dhaka. Unfortunately, this transition forced Siyam to discontinue his schooling. In early 2024, Siyam’s situation came to light during a community survey of out-of-school children conducted by teacher Sumona Islam from Swamibag Shikhon Kendra-2. Recognizing his need, Siyam was enrolled at the ABAL Learning Centre. Following a diagnostic assessment, he was placed in the Yellow Group, giving him another chance to continue his education. Siyam now lives with his grandmother, who works as a cleaner in an office, earning BDT 8,000 per month. Despite her hard work, it is extremely difficult for her to cover rent, food, and other household expenses with such a limited income. Each morning she leaves for work and only returns in the evening, leaving Siyam alone at home throughout the day. Since Roksana only cooks at night, Siyam usually has to manage his breakfast and lunch with stale food. At times, he wanders around outside, as there is little to keep him engaged at home. Despite these hardships, Siyam remains cheerful and hopeful. He loves playing cricket with friends in his community and often watches matches on television at their houses. His passion for the sport has inspired him to dream of becoming a professional cricketer in the future. At the same time, Siyam is very attentive to his studies. He attends school regularly, participates actively in class and is motivated to learn. He feels happy and grateful to have the opportunity to continue his education after such disruption in his early childhood.
